Australia Travel Guide: Climate in Australia

Australia is the sixth largest country and is the smallest continent in the world. Given its vast size, it’s no wonder that the country of Australia experiences a wide variety of climates. The climate in Australia varies from a subtropical rain forest climate on the northeastern portion of the country, to a dry desert climate at the center of the nation. In fact, Australia is considered one of the driest continents in the world. In a year, it will only receive an average rainfall of less than 600 millimeters. Less than half of the country receives less than 300 millimeters average rainfall.

Because it is located in the southern hemisphere, its climate is opposite to that of those countries located in the northern hemisphere, such as the United States and Canada. This makes Australia the perfect getaway destination for those looking to escape the harsh winter climates of their countries.

The summer season in Australia falls between the months of December and February. The autumn months are from March to May. The winter season coincides with the summer season of countries found in the northern hemisphere, so June, July and August are considered wintertime months. Finally, September to November is the springtime.

The bulk of the country’s land area is known as the Outback, which encompasses the interior portion of the country. Here, there is a desert climate and it is one of the most arid places in the world. The northern regions of the country usually have warm weather. On the other hand, the southern portions of the country have a cooler climate especially during the winter season. This is the reason why most Australians have settled along the coast, where the climate is more pleasant all year round.

The ocean currents greatly influence the climate of the land. The Indian Ocean Dipole and the El Nino Southern Oscillation produce both the wet and dry weather in the country. This is the reason why there are cyclones experienced in the northern portion of the country. As such, the Northern Territory of Australia experiences monsoon rains in the summer, while the southwest portion enjoys a Mediterranean climate.
